This special crocus is the same one that is famous for it's delectable stamens.  The spice know as saffron is the flowers stamens, hence the high price for saffron in the spice market. 

Place bulbs 4 inches deep and 4 inches apart in well-draining soil.They are a zone 4 plant so it may be beneficial to do a fall planting, allow the plant to flower and then dig up and replant in early spring for colder zones. Full to partial sun is best.

There are unique and varying methods of growing saffron crocus in a hydroponic setting as well.
